What the test is for
A backflow preventer sits between your property and the public main. Its job is to stop water that has already entered your system from being pushed or pulled back into the supply everyone else drinks from. That reversal happens when pressure drops, which is why a main break or a hydrant draw can turn an irrigation line into a contamination path.
Because the device protects the public side, the utility is the one that requires the test, not the building owner. The assembly is mechanical, it wears, and the only way to know it still holds is to put a gauge on it once a year.
Reduced pressure zone assemblies, double check valve assemblies, pressure vacuum breakers and the shutoffs that go with them, on domestic, irrigation and fire line services. Commercial, multi-tenant and residential.
A failed assembly cannot be certified until it is repaired or replaced and retested. We carry the common rebuild parts, so in most cases that happens on the same visit rather than as a second trip. See repair and replacement.
Most purveyors in the Upstate require a certified test once a year on commercial and irrigation assemblies. Your utility sets the date and sends a notice ahead of it.
We connect a calibrated test kit to the assembly, close and open the shutoffs in sequence and read the pressure differential across each check. It tells us whether the device still holds against reverse flow. Water is off to that line for a few minutes.
Usually not, as long as we can reach the device and the shutoffs. For commercial properties we normally coordinate with whoever holds the keys rather than the owner.
We do. The completed report goes to your water purveyor after every passing test, so the only thing that comes back to you is the confirmation.
We test all of them in the same visit. Larger commercial sites often have more assemblies than the owner realises, and each one needs its own certification.
